In 1986, Cindy Jurow, LCSW, created Counseling In Schools as a response to the barriers children and families faced to receiving mental health services. Her vision was to create an organization that could provide fully funded, top quality mental health services in schools, thereby significantly reducing the issues of access and availability.

Over the years, the successful implementation of this vision has fueled the expansion of CIS from serving the mental health needs of individual children and families to include all members of a school community. Whether we are creating school day programs, afterschool programs or providing professional training to school staff, CIS will continue to look for innovative ways to promote the emotional and social development of children so that they can thrive in school and succeed in life.
